According to Homethodology, Alabama is located in the southeastern region of the United States and borders Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Alabama covers a total area of 52,419 square miles and has a population of approximately 4.9 million people. The state capital is Montgomery and its largest city is Birmingham. Alabama is known for its beaches along the Gulf Coast, its mountainous regions in the north, and its diverse cultural heritage. Agriculture is an important industry in the state with cotton being the leading crop. Other major industries include aerospace engineering, automobile manufacturing, steel production, timber harvesting and tourism. Alabama’s modern history began in the mid-20th century, when the state saw major changes in its politics, economy and civil rights movement. After World War II, Alabama was still largely a rural state with an economy based on cotton and other agricultural products. However, increased industrialization and diversification of the state’s economy began to take shape in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1963, Alabama became a major battleground for the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. led marches through Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery to protest segregation laws and promote equal rights for African Americans. The protests resulted in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination based on race or color. In 1965, George Wallace was elected governor of Alabama and continued to oppose integration efforts within the state. He was finally forced out of office after federal court orders mandated desegregation of public schools throughout Alabama in 1969. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Alabama experienced an economic boom as new industries moved into the state such as automotive manufacturing plants from foreign companies like Honda and Mercedes-Benz. This spurred growth in many cities including Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile which saw a surge in population growth during this period as well as increased investment in infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges and public transportation systems. In more recent years, Alabama has become a more politically diverse state with both Republicans and Democrats vying for control over local offices at various levels throughout the state. Additionally, economic development projects have continued to boost Alabama’s economy while also helping to reduce poverty rates among its citizens.
