Four-year M.D. program curriculum
WVSOM provides a system tract or problem based learning tract for students. Extensive clinical contact is available throughout the program. Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations and extensive use of robotics are components of both tracts. The clinical years are identical for both tracts and utilize clinician preceptors throughout the state as well as clinical settings outside of WV.

Four-year M.D. program curriculum
Competency-based preparation. Basic science courses blocked & integrated. Summer clinical & research externships. Required laptop program. 3rd year requirements in medicine, surgery, family medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, psychiatry/neurology. Required selective/elective 4th-year. About West Virginia
West Virginia has a predominantly continental climate with cool winters and warm summers. Due to the height differences, the regional climate fluctuations are considerable. In summer, strong thunderstorms, sometimes with torrents, are not uncommon. Hurricanes and tornadoes are rare.
In winter, temperatures rarely reach freezing. From December to February the temperatures are slightly below the zero degree mark. Summers are warm but pleasant with temperatures between 18 and 28 degrees.
A less favorable population development in West Virginia
West Virginia is heavily unionized and therefore predominantly represents democratic senators, governors and representatives. Well over fifty percent of government revenue is generated by the tourism sector.
West Virginia is still largely dependent on mining, but it is no longer as quiet as it was in the early days of the industrial age. The connection to modernity like other neighborhoods with innovative industrial West Virginia has long failed. As a result, population growth here was significantly lower compared to other states.
The influx was positive between 1800 and 1900, the values ranged between 17 and 41 percent. In these 100 years, the population grew from 78,500 to 958,800 residents. Until 1940, more people moved to this rural area, but only 10 to 27 percent. From 1950, the influx rates decreased regularly, in some years even negative values, i.e. a decrease in the population, were reached. These values reached up to -7.2 percent.
This is probably due to the fact that young, well-educated people are moving away. West Virginia is one of the states with the lowest proportion of academics and higher educated residents. At the same time, West Virginia has the least number of residents who speak a language other than the official language English at home.
White Americans of German, Italian, Irish and English descent are at home here alongside Americans with no foreign roots.

Harpers Ferry National Historic Park
Anyone interested in the American Civil War is in the right place in West Virginia, because this state has preserved its past and built numerous historic sites and monuments that are part of the Civil War Trail.
Harpers Ferry National Historic Park commemorates the militant slave opponent John Brown, who raided an arms store in Harpers Ferry in 1859. 18 followers supported him in this project, which was unsuccessful. John Brown was discovered, arrested, and later hanged.
New Gorge River and National Park
The New Gorge River meanders through an impressive gorge, whose rapids are very popular with rafting fans. The second highest steel bridge in the world runs across this gorge.
This arched bridge is used on four lanes and is so impressive that it is released once a year for pedestrians and extreme athletes. If you want to learn more about this impressive area, visit the Canyon Rim Center north of Beckley.
Oglebay Resort
The 600-hectare city park is an ideal destination for families, as it is not just a picnic in the country. There are numerous ways to actively pass the time, for example in the zoo, in the garden center or in the museum. Scientific demonstrations form an interesting supporting program. Various sports facilities provide additional diversion.
Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine
An interesting way to take a trip back in time, because former miners lead through the now decommissioned coal mine during a comfortable journey in replica mine cars.
Organ cave
The Organ Cave is part of a large system of limestone caves. The name says it all, because one of the stone formations has the shape of an organ.
Lost World Caverns
Visitors actually have the impression of being in a fascinating, lost world away from any civilization, because here waterfalls, stalagmites and bizarre rock formations dominate the picture.
