About Texas

Living in Texas

Texas is considered a conservative state in the United States. The Republicans also have one of their strongholds here. The U.S. Presidents from the Bush family have shaped the image of the Texans in Europe in recent decades. It is also known in this country that Texas is the state with the most capital punishment. Regardless of how you feel about these political facts, the country has a fantastic nature and an interesting way of life, which many visitors will soon discover as the typical American cliché (keywords: cowboy, cowboy hat, BBQ, rodeo).

Most Texans belong to Christian religions and are descended from Spaniards, Germans, British, Irish and French. There are African American and Asian minorities. In Central Texas in particular, many people live with German ancestors. The immigrants from Germany settled especially around Austin and San Antonio. New Braunfels (near Austin) is also known in this context, where the sausage festival is celebrated once a year. In Fredericksburg, too, German words are heard more often and one or two German words appear. Some people still speak their old language, Texas German, a mixed language of German and American.

Texas as a vacation destination

The state is also very interesting as a travel destination. The country’s nature is overwhelming. The Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks are particularly popular in Texas. The Big Bend National Park is already on the border with Mexico, which is marked by the Rio Grande. Here you come across the Chihauhau desert with the typical desert vegetation, many yuccas and a number of cactus species. The region is relatively humid for a desert, so that many animal species live here (including collared peccaries and racing cuckoos).

The highest point of Texas is in Guadalupe National Park (Guadalupe Peak with 2,667 m). The mountains contrast with the surrounding desert and form fascinating formations. In the old days, mail coaches still drove through the landscape on dusty paths. There is an old stagecoach station near the Pine Springs Visitor Center.

A visit to the National Monument in Texas, the Alibates Flint Quarries, is also a special experience. Here in the north of the state there are sites of flint that were once used by the Indians. Guided ranger tours lead there and let you experience this place.

The larger cities and metropolises such as Houston, Dallas and San Antonio are always worth a visit. We report on the sights and events there on the respective sub-pages here.

Texas is certainly a world in itself, but you should experience it!
