Four-year M.D. program curriculum
The biomedical sciences are taught in an integrated way. Clinical exposure begins in the first semester. The third-year clerkships begin in early May featuring patient problem-solving and an increasing level of responsibility. The fourth year consists of six clerkships and four electives. Seniors are required to evaluate health care delivery focusing on patient safety and quality improvement.

Vanderbilt’s curriculum provides students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become leaders and scholars in medicine. Students build a strong foundation in the biomedical and social sciences while developing clinical competence and a sustainable professional identity. A mentored scholarly project is required and electives throughout the program allow exploration of individual interests.
Tennessee History
The history of Tennessee started over 12,000 years ago. The area was first populated by the Indians of the Paleo tribe. The first European explorers came in the 16th century. Tennessee was founded in 1796. The state immediately joined the United States. In the following years, the expulsion of the Indians began. This displacement is still known today as the “Trail of Tears”.
In 1861, Tennessee was the last state to break away from the United States and join the Confederacy. However, he was also the first country to rejoin the Union. Tennessee also has the nickname “Volonteer State”, which means “state of the volunteers”. This name originated in the American-British war when many people volunteered for the war.
The state experienced an economic upswing in the 20th century. In the 1960s and 1970s, the state experienced political hot spots through the Martin Luther King civil rights movement. Last but not least, Tennessee was made famous by Elvis Presley. His Graceland estate still exists today and is a popular tourist attraction.
