The history of New Mexico

Long before the Europeans came to New Mexico, the country was populated by the Indians, the Anasazi and the Chaco. But in the 13th and 14th centuries, these tribes disappeared and the Hopi and Zuni came. When the Spanish conqueror Coronado arrived, the first conflicts began that ended with the expulsion of the Indians. In 1680 the Apache and Pueblo Indians became fraternized and drove the Spaniards away.

Mexico took over the rule of the state in 1821 and the Santa Fee Trail was built to trade. On August 15, 1846, part of the New Mexico area passed to the United States. On January 6, 1912, the state became the 47th member of the United States.

New Mexico has the highest population growth compared to the other states of the USA. This is due to the large number of immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries. The best example is the city of Las Cruses. It is located directly behind the American border and the population has increased threefold within 30 years. Today 80,000 people live there. It is the second largest city in New Mexico. Agriculture is possible, but only with irrigation systems. A large part of the economy consists of animal husbandry.
