The story of Maryland

Maryland got its name from Lord Baltimore, who named the area after Queen Henrietta Maria (wife of King Charles I of England). The first Catholic bishopric and the first Catholic cathedral in the United States were established in Maryland; religious tolerance was generally higher here than in the other colonies. On April 28, 1788, Maryland became a complete U.S. state. Politically, Maryland is more of a Blue State, that is, a supporter of the U.S. Democratic Party.

When the British tried to capture Fort McHenry near Baltimore in 1814 and the U.S. flag was still flying over the fortress the next morning, Francis Scott Key wrote the United States national anthem. Maryland abolished slavery in 1864 and sided with the northern states.

The first settlers came to Maryland in 1634. The state was the only Catholic among the Protestant colonies. It was here that the first Catholic bishopric and the first Catholic cathedral in the United States emerged.

In the 17th century there were clashes between the various faith groups of Catholics, Anglicans and Puritans. In 1649 the Maryland Tolerance Law came into being. It expressly tolerated other denominations and has since been the forerunner of the 1st Amendment.

In the 1760s, the state came back into the public eye through the construction of the Mason-Dixon line. The namesake was the geometers Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, who were supposed to draw this line to arbitrate due to territorial disagreements between the Penn and Calvert families. This border traditionally separates the southern states from the northern states. The country’s capital, Washington DC, emerged a little later

The state made a name for itself during the War of Independence. The British had tried unsuccessfully to gain access. The decision was made in the Battle of Baltimore in the defeat of the British. The troops were then honored by President George Washington as the “savior of the nation”.

Today Maryland is one of the richest states in the United States. The main economic factor was initially fishing. Since then, the state has continued to grow. Today Maryland is the center for technology and space.
