About Kentucky
Kentucky: climate and weather
The climate in the state can be described as humid-subtropical. Summers are relatively warm to hot and winters are mild. However, the pleasant climate is clouded by violent storms such as tornadoes and occasional flood disasters. In winter, violent ice storms and blizzards can sometimes reach north from Kentucky.
Whiskey, Fort Knox and Kentucky Derby
The capital Frankfort (the name relationship to Frankfurt is purely coincidental) is clearly overshadowed by the size of the cities of Louisville and Lexington.
However, the city is very cheap and central, besides the cozy and rural metropolis has plenty of sights such as the State Capitol, numerous whiskey distilleries (such as the Wild Turkey Distillery or the Buffalo Trace Distillery), the Kentucky Military Museum, the Switzer Covered Bridge (a historic covered bridge, found in many places in the eastern United States), the grave of Daniel Boones, the Zeigler House by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the Kentucky History Center with a rich history of the region.
Louisville, the state’s largest city, is on the Ohio River border with Indiana. This is where the famous ten-day Kentucky Derby takes place, the most famous horse race in the world. If you can’t attend it live, you can at least find out about the famous event in the Kentucky Derby Museum. The Muhammad Ali Center and the Louisville Slugger Museum are also worth seeing. The metropolis is also known for the Ironman Louisville, which takes place every August. In the outskirts of the city is Bourbon County, where you can visit some distilleries.
Fort 50 miles from the city is Fort Knox, where the United States’ well-preserved gold reserves are located. If you’re here, check out the Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor, where you can see tanks and other military exhibits by the famous General George Patton.
Lexington likes to call itself “Horse Capital of the World”. Because of its wealth, the city was formerly called Athens of the West. As the second largest city, it lies in the middle of the bluegrass region. The Kentucky Horse Park is particularly worth a visit, where you can calmly watch jockeys and horses or watch the Parade of Breeds. Horse racing can be seen on the Keeneland Race Course near the city. The surrounding Fayette County is one of the most beautiful in the USA, lush and green pastures and a slightly hilly landscape are ideal for horse breeding here.
If you like musicals, you should visit the Lexington Opera House. the historic center of the city is worth seeing as the Lexington History Center. The city is also known as an educational location, with the University of Kentucky (known for the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team) and Transsylvania University.
In Owensboro you can visit the International Bluegrass Music Museum. There are live performances, posters, costumes and exhibited instruments. The River Of Music Party also takes place here in summer. The museum also maintains its own music channel, Radio Bluegrass. The Jerusalem Ridge Bluegrass Festival is held in Rosine, Ohio County in September. There is also a memorial and museum to Bill Monroes, the founder of the bluegrass direction.
Cave City in Barren County is known for some attractions such as amusement and amusement parks such as Dinosaur Park, Guntown Mountain or the Kentucky Down Under zoo.
Nature lovers like to come to the Daniel Boone National Forest, where you can visit caves, waterfalls and a rock scene (especially known the Natural Bridge). The world’s longest cave system (approx. 560 km) can be found in the Mammoth Cave, which is located in the national park named after it.
