About California

The nature of California is protected in numerous national parks, some of which, such as Yosemite National Park, are sometimes heavily frequented. Other national parks include Channel Islands National Park, Death Valley National Park (the driest national park in the United States and one of the hottest areas in the world), Joshua Tree National Park, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, and Lassen -Volcanic National Park, Pinnacles National Park and Redwood National Park.

The White Mountains are known for being the site of the oldest trees (awn pines) on earth. In the coastal areas of Northern California, such as in Redwood National Park, you can visit the impressive redwood trees. The giant sequoias on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada are also impressive natural giants.

The Big Sur coastline is also impressive for many holidaymakers. Here you can drive along a beautiful route for about 100 km between San Simeon and Carmel and admire the beautiful cliffs and the towering mountains of the Santa Lucia Range on the Pacific. Monterey is not only known for the Jazz Festival that takes place in September, but also for its idyllic location at Monterey Bay and the Monterey Bay Aquarium there with the local aquatic flora and fauna.

The numerous lighthouses on the California coast, which travelers like to visit, are very attractive. In Northern California you should also visit Mendocino, a pretty town with beautiful, old, Victorian-style wooden houses. The place is also known as an artists’ colony and has beautiful, well-kept cottage gardens to offer.

The Napa Valley, famous for its wine growing, counts millions of overnight stays every year and the numerous wineries are popular destinations for locals and holidaymakers alike.

The most famous city in California is Los Angeles, LA for short. The city not only has numerous beautiful and sun-drenched beaches such as Venice Beach or neighboring Santa Monica, but also amusement parks (Disneyland, Disney’s California Adventure). Film fans should visit Universal Studios and the Walk of Fame (with the stars for the “Stars”).

Also impressive are the countless buildings in the city such as U.S. Bank Tower (310 m high), the Los Angeles Union Station (1939 Central Station), the Watts Towers, the Bank of America Plaza, the City National Tower and the Aon Center.

Los Angeles also has a wide range of museums. Art lovers should visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum, the Santa Monica Museum of Art or the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Sports fans will not be bored in LA either. The Olympic city of 1932 and 1984 still impresses with a wide range of sporting events (Los Angeles Marathon) and successful sports teams in ice hockey (Anaheim Ducks), basketball (Los Angeles Lakers), Los Angeles Dodgers (baseball) and football (Los Angeles Galaxy).

San Francisco is the second metropolis that almost everyone in the world knows. Despite its size, the city is extremely cozy and is known as Flower Power and Hippie City and is not only magical from numerous films (e.g. Vertigo – From the Realm of the Dead, Basic Instinct, Mrs. Doubtfire) and series (e.g. Charmed) Witches, Monk, The Streets of San Francisco) a term, but also a favorite place for people who want to discover a special side of America and freedom.

Anyone visiting the city should definitely take a tour with the cable car. Chinatown is also worth a visit, the landmark of the city is the large Golden Gate Bridge over the San Francisco Bay. The Fischermen Wharf waterfront also exudes a special atmosphere that is somewhat reminiscent of Spain or Italy.

The Painted Ladies is a section of road that still reminds of the time before the 1906 earthquake and the subsequent fire. A visit to the prison island of Alcatraz is also interesting. A visit to the Golden Gate Park with the Japanese tea garden, the botanical garden and the planetarium is also recommended.

Anyone visiting Sacramento should check out the California State Railroad Museum (considered one of the most extensive in the world) and the zoo. The city is also home to the California Capitol and other state government institutions.
