According to Homethodology, Vermont is one of 50 states in the United States. It is located in the northeastern region of the country and is bordered by Massachusetts to the south, New Hampshire to the east, New York to the west, and the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. Vermont is known for its natural beauty, including its Green Mountains, Lake Champlain, and numerous parks. The state’s largest city is Burlington and its capital is Montpelier. Vermont has a long history of agriculture and was one of the original 13 colonies that formed the United States. The modern history of Vermont began in the mid-20th century, when the state experienced a period of economic prosperity and population growth. Following World War II, industry flourished in Vermont, particularly in manufacturing and tourism. In the 1950s, Burlington was declared the largest city in Vermont, and the University of Vermont opened its doors. In 1962, Madeleine Kunin became the first female governor of Vermont and the first Jewish governor in US history. After her tenure ended in 1991, Howard Dean was elected governor and served until 2003. During his tenure he was credited with helping to revitalize downtown Burlington as well as implement a number of progressive initiatives such as civil unions for same-sex couples. In 2004, Jim Douglas was elected Governor and served until 2011. He was followed by Peter Shumlin who served from 2011 to 2017. The current Governor is Phil Scott who took office in 2017 and has focused on strengthening economic growth while also protecting environmental resources. Vermont has become known for its progressive politics and strong sense of community that has helped it become one of America’s most desirable places to live. The state’s economy continues to be largely based on tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, and technology industries such as software development and biotechnology research.
