Tennessee has a population of approximately 6.8 million people and its capital is Nashville. The state’s economy is mainly based on agriculture and manufacturing. Tennessee is known for its music culture, particularly country music, as well as its Appalachian Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Tennessee has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the late 1700s. In the early 1800s, Tennessee became the 16th state of the United States, and in 1861 it was the last state to secede from the Union. During the Civil War, Tennessee was a major battlefield and saw some of the most intense fighting. After Reconstruction, Tennessee saw an influx of immigrants from all over Europe, leading to a more diverse population. In the 20th century, Tennessee experienced significant economic growth due to its industrialization and natural resources. It became known as an agricultural powerhouse in cotton production and later in tobacco farming. During this time, many African Americans migrated to cities like Memphis and Nashville for better job opportunities. In recent decades, Tennessee has become an important hub for transportation, technology, finance, healthcare, music, education and entertainment. The state is home to many Fortune 500 companies such as FedEx and AutoZone as well as numerous educational institutions such as Vanderbilt University and University of Tennessee Knoxville. Music City USA (Nashville) is also a major tourist destination with its vibrant country music scene.
