According to Homethodology, Pennsylvania is one of 50 states in the United States. It is located in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic regions of the country and is bordered by New York, New Jersey, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. Pennsylvania has a population of 12.8 million people as of 2019 and covers an area of 46,058 square miles. It is the 33rd largest state by area and 6th most populous state in the US. The capital city of Pennsylvania is Harrisburg. The state’s economy is mainly based on manufacturing, agriculture, health care services, mining and tourism. Pennsylvania has a rich and diverse history spanning centuries. In the modern era, Pennsylvania has experienced significant economic growth and expansion of its cities, including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Harrisburg. Following World War II, Pennsylvania experienced an industrial boom as factories and businesses moved to the state in search of low-cost labor. The 1950s and 1960s saw the development of the famous Pennsylvania Turnpike, which connected Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. In the 1970s, Pennsylvania’s economy shifted from manufacturing to services as businesses began to focus on technology and finance. During this time period, several large companies established their headquarters in Pennsylvania including Sun Oil Company (now Sunoco), Merck & Co., Hershey Foods Corporation, and PNC Financial Services Group Inc. The 1980s saw a decline in manufacturing jobs across the state as factories closed due to increased competition from other states and countries with cheaper labor costs. This caused an economic downturn in many parts of Pennsylvania that lasted into the 1990s. During this time period, many rural areas were hit particularly hard as they lost their primary source of employment with no other industries to replace them. However, in recent years there has been a resurgence in economic activity across Pennsylvania thanks largely to advances in technology that have made it easier for companies to do business remotely or from home offices located within the state. Additionally, tourism has become increasingly important for many areas of the state due to its numerous historical sites and attractions such as Gettysburg National Military Park or Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
