According to Homethodology, Oregon is one of 50 states in the United States. It is located in the Pacific Northwest region of the country and borders Washington, Idaho, Nevada and California. Oregon is known for its diverse landscape of mountains, forests, rivers and beaches. It is home to the Cascade Mountains, Crater Lake National Park, Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge. Portland is its largest city and the state capital is Salem. Oregon’s economy is based on forestry, agriculture, fishing and tourism. The modern history of Oregon began in the 1940s when the state began to experience rapid growth. World War II and the post-war period brought an influx of people to Oregon, leading to an era of industrialization, urbanization, and population growth. The 1950s saw a rise in tourism and recreation opportunities, as well as an increase in business development. In the 1960s, Oregon experienced a period of social change and progressivism. The state legalized abortion in 1969 and enacted a number of progressive laws related to civil rights, women’s rights, environmental protection, and labor rights. In 1973, Oregon became the first state to decriminalize marijuana possession. The 1980s saw a period of economic growth for Oregon but also many challenges for its rural areas. The timber industry was hit hard by environmental regulations and foreign competition while high-tech industry began to develop around Portland. The 1990s brought more economic diversification with new industries such as software development and biotechnology taking root in the state. In 1994, Oregon became the first U.S. state to legalize physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients. The 2000s were marked by continued growth in technology as well as increased energy efficiency initiatives across the state. In 2008, Oregon became one of three states that approved same-sex marriage by popular vote while also legalizing recreational marijuana use in 2014. Today, Oregon continues to be a leader on progressive issues while maintaining its strong commitment to natural resource conservation and outdoor recreation opportunities for its citizens.
