The modern history of Oregon began in the 1940s when the state began to experience rapid growth. In 1973, Oregon became the first state to decriminalize marijuana possession. The 1980s saw a period of economic growth for Oregon but also many challenges for its rural areas. The timber industry was hit hard by environmental regulations and foreign competition while high-tech industry began to develop around Portland. The 1990s brought more economic diversification with new industries such as software development and biotechnology taking root in the state. In 1994, Oregon became the first U.S. state to legalize physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients. The 2000s were marked by continued growth in technology as well as increased energy efficiency initiatives across the state. In 2008, Oregon became one of three states that approved same-sex marriage by popular vote while also legalizing recreational marijuana use in 2014. Today, Oregon continues to be a leader on progressive issues while maintaining its strong commitment to natural resource conservation and outdoor recreation opportunities for its citizens.
