The 1970s brought a boom in energy production thanks to oil and gas exploration in eastern Montana. In 1972, Glacier National Park was made into an International Peace Park with Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada. During the 1980s, Montana saw rapid population growth due to its growing economy and strong job market. In 1988, Yellowstone National Park became a World Heritage Site. In recent decades, Montana has seen a shift towards more service-based industries such as tourism, health care, education and technology.
