According to Homethodology, Missouri is one of 50 states in the United States. It is located in the Midwestern region of the country and is bordered by eight states: Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. Missouri’s capital city is Jefferson City and its largest city is Kansas City. The state has a population of approximately 6 million people and covers an area of 69,709 square miles. Missouri’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing with major industries including automotive manufacturing, aerospace engineering and food processing. Modern history of Missouri began with the Civil War, during which the state had to decide whether to remain in the Union or join the Confederacy. Ultimately, Missouri declared its neutrality and was admitted to the Union as a slave-holding state in 1821. After the Civil War, Missouri experienced a period of rapid industrialization and urbanization, becoming a major manufacturing center for automobiles, aircraft, and other products. By the 1930s, however, economic decline had set in due to competition from other areas and technological advances that made certain jobs obsolete. During World War II, Missouri factories worked around the clock to produce military supplies for Allied forces. Afterward, Missouri’s economy shifted to an emphasis on services rather than manufacturing. The 1950s and 1960s saw civil rights struggles in Missouri that mirrored those taking place across much of America. In 1964, St. Louis became one of several cities chosen as test sites for Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society programs. In 1968 it was rocked by civil unrest following Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination; however, by 1974 St Louis had elected its first African-American mayor. In recent years Missouri has experienced population growth due to migration from other states; today it is home to more than 6 million people and is considered one of America’s most livable states.
