Massachusetts is known for its rich history and its role in the American Revolution. The state has a population of over 6.9 million people and is the 14th most populous state in the country. Boston is the capital and largest city in Massachusetts. Modern history of Massachusetts began with the American Revolution in 1775, when colonial forces rebelled against British rule. The American Revolution was a pivotal moment in the state’s history, and its participants are still remembered today. Following the war, Massachusetts became one of the original 13 states of the United States and established itself as a leader in manufacturing and trade. In the 19th century, Massachusetts was at the forefront of America’s Industrial Revolution and became home to many key players in the development of new technologies. In the 20th century, Massachusetts played a major role in advancing civil rights for minorities and women. The state was home to some of America’s most influential activists such as W.E.B Du Bois, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Malcolm X. During this period, Massachusetts also saw a rise in cultural activity with cities like Boston becoming renowned for their art scene. The 21st century has seen Massachusetts continue to be an important center for business, education, and culture. The state is home to numerous universities including Harvard University and MIT as well as some of America’s largest companies such as Fidelity Investments and Gillette. Additionally, Massachusetts has become increasingly progressive with its politics by passing laws on marriage equality and health care reform that have been seen as models for other states across the country.
