It is located in the Midwestern region of the country, bordered by Nebraska to the north, Missouri to the east, Oklahoma to the south, and Colorado to the west. The state capital is Topeka and its largest city is Wichita. Kansas has a population of nearly 3 million people and an area of 82,278 square miles. Kansas was originally part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and became a state in 1861 as part of the Union during the American Civil War. The state has many attractions including Monument Rocks National Natural Landmark, Garden of Eden in Lucas, Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, Fort Larned National Historic Site and more. Agriculture is one of the major industries in Kansas with wheat being one of its most important crops along with corn and soybeans. Other industries include manufacturing, aviation technology and energy production. Modern history of Kansas began in the early 19th century when the United States acquired it as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The first settlers to arrive in the area were French traders, and they were soon followed by American settlers from both East and West. By 1854, Kansas had become a territory and was admitted to the Union as a state in 1861. During the Civil War, Kansas played an important role in supporting Union forces. Following the war, economic development increased rapidly with cattle ranching, railroads, and agriculture becoming major industries. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, many African Americans migrated to Kansas seeking freedom from Jim Crow laws in other states. In 1920s, oil was discovered in southeastern Kansas which brought an oil boom that lasted until World War II. During this time period, large numbers of people moved to urban centers such as Wichita and Topeka for employment opportunities. Since World War II, industry has diversified significantly in Kansas with manufacturing playing a major role in its economy today. The state has also attracted new businesses due to its relatively low cost of living compared to other areas of the country. In recent years, tourism has become increasingly important for Kansas with attractions such as Monument Rocks National Natural Landmark drawing visitors from around the world each year.
