It is in the southeastern region of the country and borders Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. Georgia was one of the original 13 colonies and was admitted as a state in 1788. The capital city is Atlanta. Georgia has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. It was during this time that the state began to develop its infrastructure and industry. The first railroad in the state was completed in 1845 and it connected Savannah to Augusta. This allowed for increased economic growth, as well as transportation of goods and people throughout the region. In the early 20th century, Georgia experienced a period of rapid industrialization. During this time, many new factories were built and cotton became an important cash crop. In addition, new technologies such as electricity, telephones and automobiles were introduced into the state during this period. The civil rights movement had a major impact on modern Georgia history as well. In 1964, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in Atlanta which sparked a wave of civil rights activism throughout the state. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 also had a major impact on Georgia’s political landscape by granting African Americans equal voting rights for the first time in history. In recent years, Georgia has continued to experience tremendous economic growth due to its strong business environment and diverse industries such as tourism, agriculture and manufacturing. The Atlanta metropolitan area is now home to some of the largest companies in America including Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines and UPS.
