According to Homethodology, Connecticut is one of 50 states in the United States. It is located in the northeastern part of the country and is bordered by New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Long Island Sound. Connecticut has a population of 3.6 million people and was admitted to the Union on January 9, 1788 as the fifth state. The capital city of Connecticut is Hartford. The climate in Connecticut is generally temperate with cold winters and warm summers. Average temperatures range from a low of 22°F (-5°C) in winter to a high of 82°F (27°C) in summer. The state receives an average of 45 inches (114 cm) of precipitation annually, most of which falls during the spring and summer months. Connecticut is known for its rolling hills, wooded areas, rivers, lakes and coastline along Long Island Sound. Major industries include insurance, finance, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and tourism. Agriculture plays an important role in the economy as well; dairy farming is especially prominent throughout the state with many farms producing eggs and other crops such as corn and hay. The largest cities in Connecticut are Bridgeport (population 147,629), New Haven (population 129,779), Stamford (population 128,278), Hartford (population 124,775) and Waterbury (population 110,366). Modern history of Connecticut begins in the mid-20th century when the state began to experience rapid growth and development. The manufacturing industry flourished during this time, providing jobs and economic stability. During the 1960s, Connecticut was a major player in the aerospace industry, with Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky Aircraft both located in the state. The 1970s saw Connecticut become a leader in financial services, with insurance companies such as Aetna and Travelers making their home there. This period also saw an increase in tourism, with people flocking to attractions like Mystic Seaport and Foxwoods Resort Casino. The 1980s brought economic hardship to Connecticut as manufacturing jobs moved overseas and defense contracts were cut back. The state responded by diversifying its economy by investing in biotech, finance, insurance, healthcare, and technology industries. This effort has paid off as these industries have grown rapidly since then. In recent years Connecticut has been dealing with a number of issues including budget deficits caused by high taxes on wealthy residents and businesses leaving the state due to high costs of living. Despite these issues, Connecticut remains an attractive place for businesses to operate due to its educated workforce and access to major markets like New York City.
