San Marino, small state (republic) at the northeastern foot of the Apennines within Italy, crossed by the ridge of the up to 739 m high Monte Titano. Location
The European mini state on the northern Apennine peninsula is enclosed on all sides by Italian territory. Barely 30 km from the Italian Adriatic coast, San Marino extends on the eastern roof of the Etruscan Apennines. The landscape is determined by Monte Titano (up to 739 m above sea level), a striking limestone rock with a steep north face. At its summit are the old fortifications (Guaita, Fratta or Cesta, Montale) and then the capital. The other nine village communities are on the slope and at the foot of the mountain. The climate and vegetation correspond to those of the surrounding landscapes of Italy.
Population
The residents are predominantly San Marines, 13.5% are Italians. Around 17,000 San Marines live abroad (mainly in Italy and the USA). The population density is 557 residents / km 2, the proportion of the urban population is 94%. The two largest towns in the country are Serravalle and San Marino.
Social: A system of social security has existed since 1955. The Institute for Social Security (ISS) provides insurance for old age, sickness and unemployment (compulsory insurance), and there are also family allowances and welfare benefits.
