ORT Uruguay University (ORT). It is the largest private university in Uruguay. It has 5 centers (4 faculties and 1 institute) organized on 2 campuses, more than 22,000 m2 dedicated to academic activity and more than 12,000 students.

History

It is a tertiary education institution founded in 1942 as the Uruguayan ORT Association, a non-profit civil organization whose objective was to provide the Jewish immigrant community with education and training in trades. He is a member of ORT Mundial, which began its career in 1880 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Starting in the eighties, ORT grew and became a leading institution in the training of technicians in electronics, telecommunications and computing. He obtains the first official recognition of tertiary degrees for his technological careers, being the Systems Analyst career the first authorization for tertiary studies granted to a non-governmental educational institution in Uruguay. These careers along with a number of short technical careers gave rise to the current Faculty of Engineering. In this same decade, the School of Management was founded, the first business school established in the country, which later became the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences.

In the mid- 1990s, he began the first private tertiary Design career in the country, and began his activities in the field of Communication. The Faculty of Communication & Design was created in 1994. In 1996, ORT obtained authorization from the government to function as a private university, thus becoming the first institution to be recognized in the country as such under the new legal regime, and was renamed Universidad ORT Uruguay.

Campus

The university has been a pioneer in the introduction of new careers and educational technologies in Uruguay. It is distinguished by: orientation towards innovation and quality, demanding and training in values, a solid academic body, a plural student community, small groups of up to 35 students, extensive academic resources, complete and up-to-date libraries, scholarship fund, high job placement, support for entrepreneurs and link with companies.

ORT University grants 17 undergraduate degrees, 21 graduate degrees, and 25 short careers. The flexible curricular scheme allows students to choose subjects and orient their studies according to their professional interest. It has double degree studies and joint programs with prestigious universities in Spain, the United States and New Zealand.

Sport activities

The university promotes competitive sports and recreation activities through different disciplines. The Coordination of Social and Sports Activities of the ORT Uruguay University is responsible for planning and managing the activities to be carried out during the year.

It centralizes the activities seeking to achieve the integration of the students and graduates of the different faculties through their participation in competitive and recreational activities.

This area offers the entire educational community the possibility of participating in: hockey (female), futsal (male and female), handball (female), basketball (male), volleyball (male), tennis and swimming. In some of these disciplines there are not only competitive activities but also recreational activities.

Awards

Teachers, researchers, students and graduates are distinguished by their academic activity and creative and innovative contribution in their multiple fields of action, obtaining national and international awards and recognition. Since the 1980s, Universidad ORT Uruguay has received recognition for its practices and technological applications of ICTs in the field of education, including the National Computer Science Award from the national government, and the Silver CREI Award from the Government of Spain.. The Presidency of the House of Representatives honored Universidad ORT Uruguay for its outstanding academic work in 1999. Members of its faculty have been awarded the 2010 Scopus Uruguay Prize for scientific research, the “Golden Book 2011” award and the “ 2011 Bartolomé Hidalgo Prize ”awarded by the Uruguayan Book Chamber, and the 2010 National Literature Prize awarded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
