Foundations for Studying Abroad

By | July 22, 2021

Scholarships for talented students and foundations award scholarships to particularly intelligent and talented students in order to provide them with financial support during their studies abroad. In addition to very good academic performance, there are other selection criteria, such as voluntary work, depending on the organization.

Anyone who receives such a scholarship in Germany can usually apply for additional funding from the respective organization for a study visit abroad. On the other hand, unfortunately, it is usually not possible to apply to a gifted student organization or a foundation just to fund a study abroad. Anyone who thinks they are eligible for an organization scholarship should apply early. This is the only way you can take advantage of any foreign funding.

The following overview clearly shows which scholarships from German organizations for the promotion of talented students and foundations are suitable for studying abroad. The list of the most famous organizations is sorted according to their ideal orientation.

Philosophically independent foundations

In addition to foundations and organizations for the promotion of talented students for studying abroad with a specific ideal orientation, there are organizations that are ideologically independent. The largest and best known is the German National Academic Foundation.

Academic Foundation of the German people

The German National Academic Foundation is the oldest and largest organization for the promotion of talented students in Germany. It is politically, religiously and ideologically independent and promotes particularly talented students and doctoral candidates under the motto “Achievement, Initiative, Responsibility”. In addition to very good academic achievements, scholarship holders are expected to have social skills, broad non-subject interests and proven social commitment.

Admission to the foundation can take place by self-application or at the suggestion of the school director or a university professor. In any case, various entrance exams or selection interviews must be completed in advance.

The Studienstiftung offers its scholarship holders various grants for study abroad. Funding is possible here for short stays and semesters abroad as well as for one to two-year study stays.

Max Weber program

The Max Weber program is a support program for highly gifted students at Bavarian universities. The full program name is “Max Weber Program of the Free State of Bavaria for the promotion of gifted children according to the Bavarian Elite Promotion Act”. The German National Academic Foundation is responsible for the implementation on behalf of the Free State of Bavaria. A wide range of commitment is expected from the scholarship holders in addition to excellent school and study achievements.

Bavarian high school graduates with a very good grade point average in the Abitur can apply for admission to the scholarship program themselves. Those who meet the requirements must then pass a selection test. Students at Bavarian universities can also apply themselves or come into question at the suggestion of a university professor, elite degree program or the examination office. Here too, selection seminars must be completed afterwards.

The Max Weber program also offers its scholarship holders funding opportunities for longer stays abroad. Both attending language courses abroad and studying abroad are possible. Study stays abroad can be funded for up to seven months. The scope of funding includes a monthly amount to support living expenses, a lump sum for travel expenses, a subsidy for international health insurance and the reimbursement of tuition fees up to a maximum amount.
