Attractions in Michigan
The real attraction of Michigan is its
landscape. There are lighthouses on the banks of the
blue lakes. One of them is the Big Red
Lighthouse. It is the symbol of the whole state and
attracts many visitors. But there are other sights
that you should definitely see when visiting.
Henry Ford Museum in Detroit
This imposing museum is dedicated to the car
maker Henry Ford. Many pioneering inventions can be
seen in this exhibition. At the same time, the
exhibits give an important insight into the history
of America.
Silver Lake Sand Dunes
What could be more obvious than exploring this
coastline on Lake Michigan with an off-road
vehicle. This piece of earth is a family paradise,
because there are idyllic small towns, a beach and
bike paths.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
This fascinating dune landscape was formed
millions of years ago. It extends for over 57
kilometers along the Lake Michigan shore. There are
numerous opportunities for camping, canoeing or
excursions accompanied by rangers.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
These famous rocks have been created through
mineral deposits over the years. Characteristic of
this area are the beaches, waterfalls, lakes, deep
forest areas and striking coastal areas. Hiking,
camping or just a walk through this landscape is
possible all year round.
Detroit Zoo
This is an excursion tip for the whole
family. The biggest attraction of this zoo are the
80 penguins, who roam the 1.2 million liter
pool. There are also giraffes and other interesting
animals to see. These include otters, wolves,
butterflies and many more.
Detroit Institute of Arts
This museum has over 100 exhibition rooms with
works by Warhol and Degas. Diego Rivera's famous
"Detroit Industry" mural is also located here.
Grand Haven State Park
This wonderful beach on Lake Michigan has an area
of 48 hectares. A walk across the pier leads
directly into the city with many restaurants, bars
and shops.
Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island
The island is completely car-free. The Grand
Hotel was built in 1887. It is a prime example of
Victorian architecture. The island can be explored
with a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.
Isle Royal National Park
This part of Lake Superior is on the Canadian
border. Nature is particularly impressive, as it is
still contemplative and untouched. The area
particularly attracts divers as there are many
shipwrecks to be seen here.
In addition to the impressive nature, there are
numerous buildings that date back to the colonial
period. Michigan is also known for its
universities. The most famous, Western Michigan
University, is located in Kalamazoo. Michigan has
many other attractions that are worth
visiting. There are numerous forest areas and some
attractive national parks.
In addition to the large lakes, there are also
many smaller lakes, a total of 12,000, deep water
ports and a long coastal region with more
lighthouses than in other regions of the USA. Don't
miss the eight-kilometer Mackinac Bridge that
connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan.
The largest sports stadium in the USA can
be found in Ann Arbor. It has 107,600
seats. Michigan offers so much that a one-off
vacation is far too short. If you can, you should
take more time to visit this fascinating state.

The history of Michigan
After the Europeans arrived in Michigan, the
territory was initially under French and later under
English control. After the War of Independence,
several states claimed the land. In 1787, the states
ceded their claims and the Northwest Territory, now
Michigan, was created. Slavery was prohibited, but
the French and English were allowed to keep
slaves. Today, however, it is believed that the
slaves were not African Americans, but Native
Americans.
The Wisconsin Territory was created in 1836. As a
result, the Michigan territory shrank. On July 3,
1836, the Wisconsin Territory was spun off from the
Michigan Territory. The reason for this was
Michigan's admission to the Union. Detroit remained
the capital until March 17, 1847. Lansing was later
named the capital. |
