Louisiana: climate and weather

The climate in Louisiana is humid and subtropical with hot summers and mostly mild, pleasant winters, with cold spells occasionally occurring. Thunderstorms can often occur in summer, and Louisiana is located in the vulnerable hurricane zone and is also at risk for tornadoes.

French Quarter and Mardi Gras Carnival

One of the most famous cities in the USA is New Orleans, but this metropolis has often made headlines due to natural disasters in recent years. The city was hit particularly hard in 2005 by hurricane Katrina and the associated tsunami in the city below sea level. The city has always been a melting pot of different nations and influences.

New Orleans is American, French, Spanish, Creole and Caribbean. Unfortunately, this positive side has always lost the image of a city with high levels of crime and lawlessness. The city is also considered the cradle of jazz and there are almost an infinite number of jazz bars in the city.

The historic center is still called the French Quarter, where you can still feel the feeling of the French colonial era and the red light district. Here you can visit the Café du Monde or participate in the parties on Bourbon Street. Creole architecture can be found on Dumaine Street 623 with the Madame John's Legacy. The Old Post Office and Custom House is also worth seeing.

Art lovers should visit the New Orleans Museum of Art or the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Also of interest are the National World War II Museum, Louisiana's Civil War Museum (Confederate Memorial Hall), the New Orleans Mint or a trip in the city with the paddle steamer Natchez. If you want, you can also take a tour with the nostalgic tram. Also worth seeing is the huge City Park (known for its oak trees), the Botanical Garden and the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans.

Due to the low location there are no cemeteries in the city but special mausoleums (Cities of the Dead). Legendary in this context are the jazz funerals (jazz funeral) with a marching band, which alternately play both sad and happy music.

New Orleans is also known for its carnival, with numerous parades and Mardi Gras, as the last and most important day. The famous Jazz and Heritage Festival takes place in spring at the fairgrounds. The city is also known for its exotic Cajun cuisine with dishes like Poor Boy or golf oysters.

The city can be reached by plane via Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. A few minutes away from the city is the New Orleans Plantation Country, where you can find some pretty pre-Civil War homes.

In Baton Rouge you will find the State Capitol of Louisiana as well as some very nice houses from the time before the civil war. If you want to learn more about the old days and plantation management, you should visit the Magnolia Mound Plantation House or the Nottoway Plantation. You can learn more about the history of the state at the Louisiana State Museum.

In Louisiana there are also tours in the Cajun region, where you can also take tours in the swamps (and their wildlife with alligators) of the region.
