If you travel to Illinois, you cannot avoid
Chicago. The economically strong metropolis is
characterized by an impressive location on Lake
Michigan and an impressive skyline. The tallest
building in Chicago is the Willis Tower with
a height of 442 m. The Trump International Hotel and
Tower is still 423 m high. The city's landmark,
however, is the Old Water Tower from 1869. You
should definitely take a close look at the playful
and pretty building.
Chicago is known in music as the capital of jazz,
blues and soul. Hip hop was added in more
recent times, and not only Kanye West grew up here.

Art lovers should visit the Museum of
Contemporary Art (MCA) and the Art
Institute of Chicago. Scientists as well as
ethnologists get their money's worth in the Field
Museum of Natural History. The John G. Shedd
Aquarium is located on the same site, where you can
see thousands of fish and dolphins and which is one
of the largest covered aquariums on earth. The
building of the Museum of Science and Industry dates
back to the 1893 World's Fair.
If you are interested in space, you
should visit the legendary Adler Planetarium,
which was completed in 1930 and still shows
impressive historical instruments but also modern
laser shows.
If you visit Chicago, you should visit the
city's 40 km (!) Long beach on Lake
Michigan. It gives the feeling of being in a port
city on the Atlantic. Sports enthusiasts in Chicago
can watch games from the Chicago Blackhawks (ice
hockey), the Chicago Bears (football), the Chicago
Cubs (baseball) or the Chicago Bulls
(baseball). The Chicago Marathon, which
takes place every autumn, is also world-famous from
a sporting point of view.
One of the most famous parks in the United States
is Grant Park, which is also jokingly
called the Chicago front yard. The Millennium
Park is also impressive here. Here you
should visit the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, a music
pavilion, also worth seeing the Crown Fountain and
the 110-ton Cloud Gate.
There are also some shopping outlets in the
Chicago area, making the city an ideal place to
shop. Zoo enthusiasts can also visit the Brookfield
Zoo near the metropolis. America's most famous
street, Route 66 also starts in Chicago
and ends in Santa Monica, California. Anyone who
embarks on this adventure will get to know America
from its very own side and dimension.
There are also Amish congregations in Illinois,
one of which can be found in Arcola where
the Amish Interpretive Center provides information
about this religious group with German roots.
Hikers, water sports enthusiasts and bird lovers
will not be bored in the Cache River wetland. A
quiet and cozy place is the old mining town of Galena,
where you can also find numerous gastronomic
offers. In Metropolis in southern
Illinois you can find a 4.5 m high Superman statue
and right next to it a figure of Lois Lane.
In the capital, Springfield, in the heart of
Illinois, you should visit the Abraham Lincoln
Presidential Library and museum. You can learn
more about the state in the Illinois State
Museum. In addition to today's State Capitol,
the city is also home to the Old State Capitol and
other current government institutions in the state.
The Dana-Thomas-House is also popular, and in
August the Illinois State Fair takes place
in Springfield, a folk festival and an agricultural
fair. There are also some interesting amusement
parks in the city such as the Caribbean Water Park
and the Knights Action Park that are well worth a
detour. |
